Composite geomembrane

A plastic film laminated with nonwoven geotextile. One fabric and one film, or two fabrics and one film. The barrier is the film; the fabric adds strength, puncture resistance and friction.

The brochure says seepage control depends on the film. PVC and polyethylene are both named; polyethylene is described as the film more often used in domestic work because it is lighter, more extensible, cheaper, and better in the cold.

The film is there to cut the leakage path and to stretch with the structure. The nonwoven, needle-punched or heat-bonded, raises tensile strength and puncture resistance. Its rough face increases friction against the cover soil.

The brochure describes resistance to bacteria and to acids, alkalis and salts.

What the brochure emphasises

  • One geotextile plus one film, or two geotextiles plus one film.
  • A welding selvedge can be left, or left off, to the buyer’s requirement.

Uses named in the brochure

  • River and dam works, hydraulic tunnels, canals and reservoirs.
  • Pollution control in metallurgical and chemical plants.
  • Building, transport and environmental works.
